Like a sultry premonition of future longings, the dPulse debut album Mind The Gap from the enigmatic duo Vortexpresents the best that Trip Hop and Chill has to offer. Slinky downtempo grooves (check: ‘Oxygen’); insightful song craft and an overall vibe that seems a crossroads between New York chic and London sensibility.
Vocalist Chlorine (whose credits include work with Sting, Roberta Flack and Ziggy Marley, among others) sets the tone, with a presence that gives Mind The Gap a confectioners’ sheen; while producer Binary builds a veneer of sound…only to gradually strip it away and expose these tracks for what they are – simply great songs. Often compared with Portishead and Tricky, Vortex could give either a run for their money.
